The title Vade Mecum suggests a handbook or manual carried about by a person for constant reference. Herein I collect various ideas which have proven useful in my teaching. I assume teachers will prescribe supplementary exercises as necessary.
Also herein are scales, arpeggios and bowing variations which I use to prepare students for Nouvelle Technique de la Contrebasse, by François Rabbath.
The student must realize that responsible scale practice requires constant division of the attention between the functions of the left arm- movement, space, and time- and those of the bow arm- weight, speed, and placement.
