Amplifying your instrument seems to be one of those necessary evils. Whether it is a Symphony under the Stars or a small combo most stringed instruments need some boost to project to the audience and be heard alongside percussionists and brass players.

Until recently most piezo type pickups have been placed in some way on the bridge of the instrument. This has the immediate effect of acting as a mute. This might not be a problem when amplified but is nuisance for the rest of the time as it means constantly pulling it on and off. The Realist pickup is placed under the foot of the bridge and makes very little, if any difference to the sound of the instrument. Installation is simple and generally stays on the bass at all times.

David Gage and Ned Steinberger (the creators) felt a transducer should be equal in its ability to recreate an acoustic pizzicato and arco sound through commonly used amplifiers. Furthermore, this pick-up had to be simple, dependable, and affordable. After years of consideration and tests, they have come up with a system that achieves all of these goals.

David Gage says, “We understand the hours of practice it takes to draw your sound out of your instrument, and with this pick-up we feel your voice can be heard more accurately through an amplifier. Both recording engineers and professional musicians have been startled by the great tone and even response when playing pizzicato and arco.

This durable, self-powered, transparent piezo pickup offers a focused bass sound, perfect for those musicians who want a lot of punch without loss of fidelity. The LifeLine performs well at high volumes, offering a clear sound without boom.
Mounted at the adjuster without glue or fasteners, the LifeLine will fit on most bridges without changing a thing, and it’s just as easy to take off.

“The new pickup is really amazing. I’m totally digging the sound on stage; so much presence and no feedback problems at very loud volumes.” —Tony Garnier, Bassist and Musical Director for Bob Dylan

This pickup brings the Realist’s quality sound to more basses and to more positions on your instrument. The Realist SoundClip is an extremely well-engineered, self-contained transducer unit that offers a great deal of flexibility.

Using the Pickup

It is very easy to use. Its flexibility (positioning, tightness, removable weights) and portability (no tools needed, self-contained) make it an ideal pickup for those who want to switch between basses (or who travel and need a pickup to get a consistent sound on rental basses).

Transportability

Move your Realist SoundClip from one instrument to another instrument with ease.

Bring your SoundClip for use on rental instruments while on the road.

Remove the pickup from your bass when not playing amplified.

No Bass Modification is necessary, since the SoundClip simply clamps onto any conventional bridge. There is no filing, cutting, or custom fitting. Just open the jaws and adjust the tension wheel.

Bridge Location is not fixed, so you can locate the pickup low on the bridge, for more body warmth, or move it higher up on the leg to bring in some more string detail to your sound… to achieve your desired sound on almost any bass.

Two Adjustable/Removable Weights are for adjusting the character of the sound.

Volume Control is built into the pickup so adjustments are very convenient.

Durable, Solid Brass Construction — this thing is solid!

Convenient Carry Case is included for travel.

A gigging musician playing any acoustic instrument will know the difficulties in reproducing the sonic qualities at a cafe or pub gig, that sounded so great at home.

The EDM-1 Acoustic Pre-Amp solves these problems by taking the signal from the instruments’ pickup and giving you complete control over the bass, mid and treble, helping to add a richness while achieving a beautifully clean sound.

Control like never before.

The Range control is a Hi-Pass filter that has settings for several different instruments including; Rock Acoustic (300Hz), Ukulele, Violin/Mandolin, Viola, Tenor G, Bouzouki, Guitar (80Hz), Low D Guitar, Cello, Baritone and Bass. Able to be mounted on a belt clip or screwed onto a mic stand, the EDM-1 is built into a sturdy metal casing which comes with a set of batteries and rubber feet.

The EDM-1 is an essential piece of kit for acoustic players – solo, duet or in a small band – who need to keep a handle over their sound and deliver an authentic acoustic tone to the masses.

The EDM-1 Specs:

Perfect for PA amplification and live recording the 4099B offers practically unlimited placement possibilities as well as a sound that is considerably more natural than an internal microphone or pick-up.

The 4099B is a unique clip microphone inheriting the sonic approach from the legendary DPA studio microphones to a new instrument microphone. Representing years of research and development, the 4099 condenser microphones feature supercardioid polar patterns for superior gain-before-feedback. Fully capable of handling the instrument’s dynamic range and subtle details, these microphones live up to their pedigree with sound as accurate as DPA’s other world-class microphones.

Despite its tiny, discreet size and elegant, lightweight design, 4099B is extremely rugged. The versatile gooseneck provides stable and repeatable positioning. The mics can be easily unclipped and repositioned or moved to another instrument with only one hand, while the mounting system is designed never to mar or scratch the finish of your instrument.

Reduce cable clutter on stage by using the DAO4099 Double Cable. The cable carries both the 4099 mic extension cable and a pick-up jack connection in one dual cable run in a nylon sock. The jack uses high quality Mogami cable and gold Neutrik connectors. At the instrument end there is a right-angled connector. The microphone extension is the DPA miniature cable.

Through the use of our extensive adapter system, the 4099 is compatible with virtually any wireless system and can also be used as a standard 48V phantom powered microphone via the included XLR connector.

Fleet owners of 4099s will appreciate the multiplicity of using the microphone for a number of different instruments simply by moving the microphone/gooseneck part to another instrument clip from the range.

With its very flexible design for a wide variety of mounting and positioning possibilities along with its extremely natural sound, the 4099 is truly a musician’s mic without equal. Continuing DPA’s heritage of sonic excellence, this series of microphones achieves the purest reproduction of your instrument and therefore your full range of expression.

The first component, the popular Bass Max, is mounted in the bridge wing. Two transducers are combined using a sandwich technique, in order to maximize and enhance vibrations captured from the entire bridge. Due to its specialized construction, only one unit is necessary to provide an even signal from all four (or five) of the double bass’ strings. Its strong midrange power is ideal for cutting through the mix in loud rockabilly situations, or providing a warm and supportive line for country bluegrass.

The specially modified single transducer is ideal for capturing fingerboard sounds. Its unique size and shape allows precision placement and the equalization from the preamplifier lets the player blend in just the right amount of slap, growl, and other fingerboard sounds to reach their audience. This allows the player to achieve the exact sound coloration and effect they desire.

The Dual Channel Mixer has internal gain, bass, treble trim pots for each pickup, allowing impressive +/- 20dB tonal adjustments. External volume controls let you balance the volumes of the bridge and fingerboard transducers on the fly. A convenient belt clip is included with this compact preamplifier, which weighs a mere ten ounces with the battery installed. A six foot, high quality three conductor (1/4 inch stereo) cable is included to complete the package. The Bass Master RB Plus includes an extra output in the preamp.

Power: 9 volt battery (not included)

What people are saying about this product…

Lance (The Hillibilly Hellcats) – “I am a believer! After several more gigs with the K&K Rockabilly pickup I am convinced that it is the best one on the market today for accommodating the Rockabilly slap bass player. I have tried the Underwood, Fishman, David Gage, AKG C149, and the Schaller pickup, and the K&K is by far the best for the Rockabilly player… Another thing I think you should emphasize… is that this pickup can be used at much higher volumes, (before feedback) than most of the competition. This is the most common complaint I hear from Rockabilly bass players – Is that their sound is good at home, but once they get going with the drums, they have to turn up and then the sound turns to mud. I have not had that problem with the K&K.”

Shawn Burrell (Founder of RockabillyBass.com) – “I love the Rockabilly pickup! … The pickup is plenty loud, and sounds great! I’ve played it in several clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, and it’s been fantastic.” “I have tried other pickups and none of them worked well at all. They would feedback and didn’t have the sound that I was looking for. I received the K&K rockabilly bass pickup with preamp about two years ago and use it almost daily. It is durable, sounds great and is fairly priced.”

Tex Waggoner (Bass player for Blue Combo) – “I got the the K&K Rockabilly Slap Special Wednesday and used it for the first time Thursday night. It was great! It really sounded like MY bass. The band complimented me all night about my new bass sound…I will be recommending the K&K pickups to my URB buddies!”

Sean Thomas McBride – “I just played out with the rockabilly setup and it is absolutely the only pickup (that I’ve had on *any* instrument) that I’ve ever actually been happy with!!! I’m not even really slapping, but it picks up little fingerboard nuances which make a huge difference in the sound, it’s so much more real. The wing sound, so rich…mmmmmmmm.”

Dirk Wunderlich – “Last weekend I played my first gig with the new pickup: WOW! It is so great. I could play so loud with an incredible sound. It’s perfect. I will recommend this pickup to all Slappers I know.”

“Wow! My rig has never sounded so good! I should have bought one of these a long time ago!”

“I couldn’t believe my ears! What I heard through the amp was what my bass sounded like unamplified.”

“Thanks for opening new levels of bass for me!”

“The Rockabilly System is so easy to set up and it sounds wonderful and musical, even without any EQ!”

“A very smooth and full acoustical sound!”

“I was in the market to buy a pickup for my 5/8ths size upright bass. It had to be durable as I am very hard on my equipment. The K&K Bass Max is the fifth pick-up I’ve used and it is now by far my favourite. I play with The Club Django Sextet of Toronto and handle all the MC work for the band….I don’t want to be concerned about my bass clipping or pocking. The Bass Max is worry-free.”
Abbey Sholzberg (Toronto, Canada)

“I have been extremely happy with my Bass sound after the addition of your Bass Max pickup. My Bass is getting a very full, natural sound, but also very articulate and punchy. I have gone through a small financial fortune and and many years looking for something that could deliver like the K&K Bass Max, and now the search is over!!!”
Tom Kennedy (January 2004 Artist of the Month)

“I just got a K&K Bass Max and love it. I couldn’t believe the sound – I had tried the Fishman and Barcus-Berry, and thought the K&K would only be an improvement, but it was a transformation! The sound out of the amp sounds like my bass. I play as much arco as pizz, and the smooth sound is wonderful.”
John Nystedt

“Wow! What a great sound. I heard comments like, “Nice,” “Clean,” “Solid,” “Warm.” Thank you for a great product at a really good price.”
Lynn Eberhardt

“Just wanted to say thanks for supplying me with such a fantastic pickup, the Bass Max. It was worth it just for the improvement in sound when I play ‘unplugged’. I couldn’t believe how much my Fishmans had been muting my sound, it was nuts. I had to learn how to tune again, hearing harmonics I had been missing for a few years!”
Mike Liston

“Suffice to say that in a wide range of applications the Bass Max has performed superbly. Whether I’m going for balls-out thumping bottom end or authentic wooden slap tone or something more delicately acoustic I’ve found the tone I need with a minimum of knob twistery. I’ve been able to run the Ampeg IV Pro with all the tone controls flat. Consider me most satisfied…”
