2005
Double Bass Workshop
In
April 2005, 55 bass players from around Australia with ages varying
from 9 to 35 (with the majority being secondary school and tertiary
students) gathered in Adelaide for lessons, concerts, master classes
and inspiration at the 3rd bi-annual Double Bass Workshop.
Francois
Rabbath amazed Adelaide audiences with 3 performances of the Carmen
Suite with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. The remaining faculty,
Kees Boersma (Sydney), Peter McLachlan (Adelaide), Ken Poggioli
(Brisbane), Steve Reeves (Melbourne), Joan Wright (Perth), George
Vance (Washington D.C.) and Nicholas Walker (New York) all shared
concerts on the remaining nights of the event to enthusiastic
audiences.
For
the first time, Benedict Puglisi (Luthier) joined the faculty
to present five, 2 hour sessions on building and setting up a
double bass.
The
success of the workshop is best described by the participants:
"I
thought it was awesome and the best experience with bass I've
had. Since I've been back I have been really inspired to play
like the virtuosos who were there."
"Just
a quick note to say thank you all for the tremendous autumn bass
workshop. I derived a great deal of motivation and information
from this workshop again. I only need another 100 years to put
it into practise. Oh well here's trying!"
"It
is a little brain numbing to recall all the intentional and unintentional
learning, but what a way to numb the brain! I am sure that
the wooden memory chests of all who participated will resonate
for many years with the palette of exceptional sound, philosophy
and joy provided throughout the workshop".
"I'm
just writing to thank you for a most wonderful and enlightening
time I had at the National Bass Workshop last week. To be exposed
to the most amazing talent from both young and, shall we say more
experienced players has given me fantastic new perspectives to
follow over the next few years. It was great to see so many people
whose only wish is to see others do better and learn new things
is a great change to what I have seen until now, and I must say
I am already looking forward to the next workshop."
The
faculty were:Kees Boersma,
Peter McLachlan, Ken Poggioli, Benedict Puglisi, François
Rabbath, Steve Reeves, George Vance, Nicholas Walker, and Joan
Wright
